HISTORY: After the start of Europeans arriving in Australia, the newly formed ‘Cedar Cutters’ job was to "open-up" new areas for the expanding European settlements. Unfortunately, this resulted in the exploitation and destruction of Australian rainforests. The legendary Red Cedar (Toona ciliata) or ‘Red Gold’ which is prized for its beautiful timber, was quickly cut down and was commercially extinct by the beginning of the 20th century. Around 1802 the Governor then issued restrictions on cutting down Red Cedar trees without authority. Even with restrictions in place, this didn’t stop the decimation of these old giants, wherever they stood they would soon fall, thus removing thousands of these magnificent old trees from existence.
