Kookaburra made from Weathering Steel
The Kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family and is the largest of all the kingfishers. It is famous for its laughter which echoes through the Australian landscape. From the suburbs of Sydney to the thickest bushland of the Pilliga Scrub, the Kookaburra can be heard laughing.
I have used Australian made weathering steel for the kookaburra, not cheap mild steel!! Weathering steel is part of a group of steel alloys that were developed to eliminate the need for painting. It forms a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather. The rust-like patina is actually a complex protective oxide layer that forms on the steel’s surface.
Approx size: 700x320mm. Nearly 3 times the size of the competitions Kookaburra!!!
I have made this kookaburra with a lot of detail. It is not a very small, simple silhouette with a few cut paths like other bird metal art found on the internet. It has high detail and a lot of work has gone into designing and making every kookaburra that leaves my workshop. I have also made a strong bracket that is welded to the branch for easy fixing to a tree or post.
