Black Bean Castanospermum australe Tree ( Moreton Bay Chestnut ) is the only species in the genus Castanospermum. It is a flowering plant in the Fabaceae family which is native to the east coast of Australia. It can grow to around 20m. The Black Bean has a wide shady canopy that is ideal for parks, resorts and areas you wish to beautify. It flowers in spring/summer with long red and yellow pea-shaped flowers. The nectar produced by the flowers attracts birds and butterflies. The seeds that are produced hold 3 to 5 Seeds in a large seed pod. Be aware that the seeds are poisonous to humans and livestock!!! 

Habitat: Warm temperate to tropical, but can grow as far south as Melbourne in a sunny,  position.  It can adapt to different soil types but prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soils. 

Uses: Black Bean has proven to be an excellent ornamental, it can be used both indoors and outdoors. The Black Bean has also proved to be very valuable as a timber species, it has been used for Joinery, turnery, carving, inlay work, walking sticks, umbrella sticks, gunstocks, knife handles, and vehicle and carriage building.
